The Clinard Family Tree

Germany seems to be the origin of our surname. Anglicized sometimes around the
mid-1700s to the time of the first US census, our surname was originally spelled Kleinert.
Many variants of the spelling are found in early records, in PA and NC especially.

Our name probably means "Little or Small". That's what the word 'klein" in the German
language means. So our surname may have derived from our ancestor based on his
physical stature or perhaps from a family relationship, designating th
e "junior", the
"younger" of two brothers, or the son as opposed to the father.
