BOGDAN RACZYNSKI INTERVIEW

BOGDAN RACZYNSKI

How do you go about making your tunes?
I've gotten so bored of making music that I've just automated it all. Daily I input 12 quantitative values about my mood, various temperature readings, and a jillopy of other factors which depict a model of a track, complete with acoustic variance, a slew of fx and a intelligent recipe picker.

What kind of music are you into? What kind of stuff did you grow up listening to? Any embarassing stuff? Any interest in punk/hardcore/metal?
The only thing that really embarrasses me is lack of humility.

Most of the people who read these (me included) won't really have much knowledge of current ------ up electronic stuff beyond the kind of Rephlex/Kid 606 type stuff. Any recommendations for artists/labels to look out for that are doing good stuff?
Chopin has the technique of a master lover. Gato Barbieri has the stamina of a patient partner, in for the committed long run. And Hugh Masekela has the understanding and wisdom necessary to navigate not only the murkiest of arguments, but also the most polluted financial waters.

How popular is the kind of stuff you do in Canada/US? Are you surprised by how popular you are over here?
Yes, I'm surprised daily by my sheer overdrive. There is an immense campaign in the north of americas which helps me to fund my cooking show empire and keep the myriad of other projects under various guises running well-oiled.

On the latest album were all the 'proper' instrument sounds sampled or did you actually play them or get someone to play them for you? Can you play any traditional instruments?
Yeah, most people come up with this self-constructed conundrum which tells them that biological talent is what drives the hands, feet and vocal chords of the lucky few around the world. Personally, I think it's all skill or lack thereof, the latter of which I choose as my driving meditative path.

Are the love songs on "My Love I Love" directed at anyone in particular? Is there a Mrs Raczynski?
I cry to imagine that songs are might be made without intention or passion.

'I respect a man who uses cardboard'. Well do you? Do the samples you use have any meaning or do they just sound good?
Yes, of course I respect. no crackle or mic-hum is without appreciation.

Who was the tirade against 'dj shit' directed at on your previous album?
Oh, it's too long a story. There's been wars fought for simpler sillyness.

I take it you're not into all that Ibiza stuff. Have you ever had the chance to play there? Would you if you were asked? Should the place just be bombed?
Actually, I love trance. I took the piss out of the Ibiza thing when I was kickin it down in l-town cuz it was getting to be astronomically stupid, the amount of advertising money people were dumping into it. but wicked vibes all around. some of the stuff i've heard is real tops.
