Matthew 5:6, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
Introduction:
A. Thus far we have studied:
1. "Poor In Spirit" --- (Conviction) --- Those who recognize their Adamic nature --- their utter spiritual bankruptcy.
2. "Mourn" --- (Repentance) --- Those who mourn over sins they have committed and their Adamic nature.
3. "Meek" --- (Dependence) --- Those who depend entirely upon God for salvation and service.
B. Today, they that "Hunger And Thirst After Righteousness" --- (Love for God) --- Those who (unlike most Christians) have Not Left Their First Love --- but want more of Him ...
I. This Beatitude is the Answer To All The Problems in the world today.
A. Our Greatest Problem is Sin.
1. Wars --- Divorces --- Unhappiness --- etc.
2. ..... are all the Results of Hungering and Thirsting after the Wrong Things.
3. If we Seek Pleasure --- we will get Misery.
B. Man Was Created By God And For God!
1. You can give man Social and Economic Freedom --- but if his Thirst for Fellowship with God is Not Satisfied --- he will still behave like an Animal.
2. St. Augustine said, "Thou hast made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless, until they find their rest in Thee."
3. Today, we have Everything a modern and a computer and a materialistic age can provide --- yet .....
a. Boredom and Unhappiness have reached an All Time High.
b. Morals have plunged to an All Time Low.
4. The Reason --- our Hunger For God Has Not Been Satisfied.
5. You can know a Man's Character, if you know the things he Delights In.
C. Hunger and Thirst are Basic Essentials of human Existence --- if someone is starving, nothing else is important until that craving for food is satisfied.
1. If we Didn't Have The Desire for food and liquid, we Wouldn't Last Very Long --- this is No Less True In Our Spiritual Lives.
2. Remember when you were first Saved --- No one had to tell you to:
a. To Pray,
b. To Read Your Bible,
c. To Witness to others.
You Wanted (Hungered and Thirsted) To Do These Things.
3. When we Lose Our Appetite for food, we are usually Sick or Dead ---
This is No Less True when we Lose Our Appetite For The Things of God.
4. Sometimes, we Blame our Lack of Desire on Others.
a. They didn't put the food in the Kind of Bowl that I wanted to eat out of --- like little kids wanting a certain glass to drink out of.
b. Besides, it is like prisoners going on a Hunger Strike --- it is the Pastor's Responsibility To Force Feed Them.
5. And, some Christian Wonder Why They Are Not Happy!
D. The Whole World is Seeking Happiness.
1. The Motive behind Every act and ambition is that of Seeking Happiness.
2. Everything is Designed for Happiness --- Not Righteousness.
3. Their One Goal, One Objective, One Ambition in life is to Be Happy.
4. However, the World Never seems to be able to find it.
E. Christians are Not to Hunger and Thirst after Happiness --- but rather Righteousness.
1. Happiness is Never something that should be Sought Directly.
2. Happiness is always something that Results from seeking something else.
3. The Natural man hungers and thirst for that which brings him Gain, Wealth, Ease, Honor .....
4. Matt. 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
F. The Only people who are Truly Happy and those who are Seeking To Be Righteous.
1. Whenever you put happiness before righteousness, you will be Doomed To Misery.
2. It is Righteousness that Exalts A Nation.
Pro. 14:34, "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."
3. The most Important thing for all of us is to discover What Righteousness Means.
(More about this later)
4. A Sinner cannot fellowship with a Holy and Righteous God.
G. There is a Fundamental Error in the world today.
1. Generally, a man suffering from a painful disease has One Desire --- to be relieved of his pain.
a. This is understandable --- no one likes to suffer pain.
b. He is willing to do anything to alleviate his pain.
2. However, if the Doctor is also Only Concerned about Relieving the pain --- he is a Very Bad Doctor.
a. His primary duty is to Discover The Cause of the pain --- and treat that.
b. Pain is a Wonderful Thing --- it calls attention to the disease.
c. The Ultimate Treatment for pain is to Treat The Disease, Not The Pain.
d. To merely treat the pain --- without discovering the cause --- is Extremely Dangerous to the life of the patient --- and also very Cruel.
e. The patient may be out of pain --- seem to be well --- but the Cause of The Trouble Is Still There.
3. This is the Folly that the World is guilty of --- they seek to Relieve their pain and Forget their troubles.
a. Entertainment --- movies --- T.V. --- etc.
b. Liquor --- drugs --- etc.
c. All of these are merely Escapes .....
H. But, the Big Question is: "What Is The Cause of the Pain, the Unhappiness, the Wretchedness, of this world?
1. The Trouble With Mankind is not one particular manifestation of sin --- but rather Sin Itself.
Rom. 3:10, "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" --- V. 23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
2. They are Not Happy who hunger and thirst after Happiness --- they Are Happy who hunger and thirst after Righteousness.
I. This is equally true of many Within The Church.
1. They spend their whole life Seeking something they can Never Find.
a. They Go From Church To Church, hoping to get this wonderful experience that is going to fill them with Joy and flood them with Rhapsody.
b. They see that Other People Have It, but, they themselves can't seem to get it.
c. They seek it --- covet it --- hunger and thirst for it --- but Never Seem To Find It.
2. God Never meant for us to hunger and thirst after Experiences.
We are Not to seek Happiness --- we Are to seek Righteousness.
3. The kind of religious Experience that does Not produce Righteousness in the life is Not Worth having.
4. It is a great tragedy that we do not follow the simple teachings of God's Word.
II. What Is This Righteousness? --- Justification --- Sanctification
A. It is Not a sort of General Righteousness, Morality, or Respectability.
1. Keeping of international treaties, etc.
2. Straight dealing --- fair play --- etc.
3. This kind of morality was taught by the Greek Pagan Philosophers.
a. The Christian Gospel does not stop at this.
b. This Beatitude speak of a Personal Righteousness.
4. Men can wax eloquent in speeches on how countries should not break their treaty, but who, themselves, have already Broken Their Own Marriage Vow and been Disloyal to their own wives.
a. The Gospel is Not Interested in this type of morality.

3. Not Just Any righteousness, but the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor. 1:30, "But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:"
2 Cor. 5:21, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
4. The righteousness of Christ Rather Than Self.
Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, ..."
5. Christ did Not come to teach us To Do righteous deeds Without Being righteous.
a. You cannot Do what you are Not.
b. The righteousness here includes not only Justification but also Sanctification.
C. Sanctification --- True righteousness has a Desire To Be Free from the Power of Sin.
1. The World in which we live is Controlled By Sin and Satan.
Eph. 2:2, "... the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:"
Eph. 6:12, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
2. Many are under the control of a Satanic Influence.
2 Cor. 4:3-4, "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
3. Even Christians have A War going on Within them.
Rom. 7:14-24, "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"
D. Sanctification includes a Desire To Be Free from the very Desire For Sin.
