The Millennial Reign of Christ

Rev. 20:1-6, "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he said hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."

Introduction:

A. This 1000-Year Period is also described as:

1. "The Kingdom of God" - (Mark 1:14-15).

2. "The Last Days" - (John 6:40).

3. "The Regeneration" - (Matt. 19:28).

4. "The Times of Refreshing" - (Acts 3:19).

5. "The Restitution of all things" - (Acts 3:21).

6. "The Day of Christ" - (1 Cor. 1:8; 5:5; 2 Cor. 1:14; Phil.1:6).

B. For 6000 Years of Recorded History, men have tried all sorts of schemes and laws to bring Peace and Prosperity --- and improve the state of mankind.

1. All of Man's Efforts to produce a Golden Age have Failed --- there is Universal Unrest and Distress --- and conditions are only Getting Worse.

2. It is for this reason we pray --- "Thy kingdom come" --- (Matt. 6:10).

3. His Kingdom Will Only Come When The King Himself Comes.

C. Various Views of The Millennium:

1. Premillennial View.

a. The early church fathers of the second century, Papias, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian, on down to the time of Augustine (354-430) all taught Premillennialism.

b. This consisted of an earthly reign of peace that was to follow the defeat of the Antichrist and the prhysical resurrection of the saints but precede botgh the judgment and the new creation.

2. Postmillennial View.

a. This view holds that the whole world will be Christianized before the return of Christ.

b. Postmillennial originated in the writings of a Unitarian by the name of Daniel Whitby (1628 - 17825).

3. Amillennial View.

a. This view goes back to Origin and Augustine in the third centuries.

c. This view denies the literal reign of Christ on earth.

d. Satan is conceived as bound at the first coming of Christ and the present age between the first and second comings of Christ is seen as the fulfillment of the Millennium.

e. The Millennium is being fulfilled now on earth, and is equivalent to the kingdom of God in you.

f. Christ second coming is immediately followed by the eternal state.

g. All the kingdom prophecies to Israel are spiritualized or applies to the church today.

h. Some Scripturals are spiritualized to apply to the future or eternal state.

i. Rather than pointing to a literal reign of Christ on earth, Isaish 11:4-10 refers to the peace and tranquillity of mind of the believer.

D. Various Methods of Interpretation:

1. The "Literal" Method:

a. Gives to each word the exact basic meaning it would have in normal, ordinary, customary suage whether in writing or in speaking.

b. This method is the only one that is consistant with the nature of Inspiration.

c. The literal method gives us a basic authority by which interpretations may be tested --- Scripture may be campared with Scripture.

2. The "Allegorical" or "Spiritual" Method:

a. Interpreting a text in a more spiritual or more profound sense.

b. The historical import is either denied or ignored.

c. Emphasis is placed entirely on a secondary sense so that the original words or events have little or no significance.

d. The literal andhistorical sense of Scripture is completely ignored.

e. This method goes beyond all principles and laws of interpretation leaven you open to the unlimited scope of your own imagination.

f. The basic authority in interpretation ceases to be the Scriptures, but the mind of the interpreter.

What Will The Millennium Be Like?

I. It Will Be A Time When Satan Is Bound And Cast Into The Bottomless Pit.

A. There can be No Permanent Peace and Prosperity while Satan is at large.

B. 1 John 3:8, "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil."

C. Rev. 20:1-2, "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,"

D. No longer will he be on the rampage like "a roaring lion". --- (1 Peter 5:8).

II. It Will Be A Time During Which The Lord Jesus Will Personally And Visibly Reign Upon The Earth.

A. Luke 1:31-33, "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

B. His kingdom Now is a Spiritual one, as He Reigns In The Hearts of His People.

Luke 17:21, "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

C. But, when He returns, it will be a Literal Kingdom:

Isa. 24:23, "Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously."

Jer. 23:5-6, "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."

Dan. 7:13-14, "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed."

D. It will be a reign of Righteousness:

Isa. 9:7, "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from hence forth ever for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."

Isa. 11:1-5, "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his lions, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins."

III. It Will Be A Time When The Saints Will Rule With Christ:

Rev. 20:4, "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years."

Luke 19:17-19, "And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. {18} And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. {19} And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities."

IV. It Will Be A Time When Sickness Will Practically Disappear From The Earth.

Isa. 33:24, "And the inhabitants shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity." --- (Zech. 14).

V. It Will Be A Time When The Power of Death Will Be Restrained And Destroyed.

Isa. 65:18-20, "But be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed."

VI. It Will Be A Time of Blessing Even For The Animal Creation:

Isa. 11:6-9, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the Leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them."

Isa. 65:25, "The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat."

Hos. 2:18, "And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of the heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely."

VII. It Will Be A Time When War And Proverty Will Be Abolished --- Abundant Joy And Prosperity Will Flourish.

Isa. 2:2-5, "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not life up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord."

Micah 4:3-4, "And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not life up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it."

Isa. 54:13, "And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children."

Isa. 55:12, "For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands."

Isa. 65:21-23, "And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them."

Amos 9:13, "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt."

VIII. It Will Be A Time of Wonderful Blessing For Israel.

Isa. 27:6, "He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit."

Zech. 8:23, "Thus saith the Lord of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you."

Zech. 13:1, "In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of david and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness."

Rom. 11:26, "And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:"

Isa. 52:1, "Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean." - V. 7-10, "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God."

Isa. 66:17-23, "They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the Lord. For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; --- And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord."

Zeph. 3:9, "For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent."

Mal. 1:11, "For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts."

Rev. 5:9-13, "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever."

XI. It Will Be A Time When The Curse Is Removed.

Rev. 22:3, "And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:"

XII. It Will Be A Time Which Finally Merges Into Eternity.

A. The millennial state will not be one of perfection:

1. Some will die.

2. Some may rebel against the authority of the King.

B. After the millennial --- Satan Will Be Loosed for a short time.

Rev. 20:7-10, "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, God and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

C. The Earth will be Purged With Fire.

2 Peter 3:10, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

It Will Then Be Glory And Blessedness For Ever.
