   Journey of The Israelites

"He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love." --- (SofS 2:4)
Travis Case, Pastor/Teacher          Northgate Baptist Church          F.E.A.S.T Ministries

1 Cor. 10:1-6, "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted."

Introduction:

A. The Bondage of the Israelites and their Deliverance from bondage, the Traveling out of Egypt across the Red Sea and on into Palestine is Typical of Our Deliverance from sin and the Entire Journey Through Life on to final victory.

B. We should avoid the tendency to Spiritualize and make a thing typical unless the Bible says it is typical.

I. They Were In Bondage In Egypt.

A. Acts 7:6, "And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years."

B. This is typical of Our Bondage To The Devil By Nature.

James 1:15, "Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."

C. No human power could deliver them and all that Moses could do was Not Sufficient to bring them out of Egypt.

D. No Amount of Effort we may make will rescue us from bondage to the devil.

II. The Passover Blood Delivered Them.

A. 1 Cor. 5:7, "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:"

B. The Passover lamb was to be Without Spot or Blemish.

1. To test this it was kept up for Four Days,

2. The lamb thus tested had to be Slain.

3. The blood then had to be Applied.

4. The blood thus applied of itself, Without Anything In Addition, constituted a Perfect Protection from judgment.

C. Christ, Our Lamb, also had to be without spot or blemish.

1. His Public Life proved this.

2. He then had to be Slain.

3. His Blood then and now has to be Applied.

4. His Blood Is Sufficient.

III. The Cloud Led Them All The Way.

A. Exodus 13:21, "And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:"

B. This is a type of the Leadership of The Holy Spirit.

C. All sons and daughters of God are Led By The Holy Spirit.

Rom. 8:14, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."

D. We do Not Need to pray for the Leadership of the Holy Spirit.

1. What we need to do is to Follow where He is already leading.

2. He is already leading, but He is not forcing us to follow.

E. The cloud led straight to the Red Sea.

IV. Crossing The Red Sea Is Typical of Baptism.

A. 1 Cor. 10:2, "And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;"

B. Those who claim to be saved and led by the Spirit of God and refuse to be baptized show that it is not the Spirit of God who is leading them.

C. First, they were Saved By The Blood and then Lead By The Holy Spirit and after that Baptism.

V. In The Wilderness --- A Type of The Church.

A. Acts 7:38, "This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:"

B. A church is a Congregation located in one place having been Called Out From The World.

C. The Israelites were Called Out of Egypt into the wilderness.

D. The Wilderness Journey was very much like the ups and downs and successes and failures of the Lord’s Church In The World Today.

VI. Joshua Was A Type of The Second Coming of Christ.

A. Moses was a type of the Personal Ministry of Jesus Christ.

B. Moses died.

C. Joshua succeeded Moses and led the Israelites to victory in Palestine.

D. Christ die, but now lives and will lead us to victory over the devil in the Millennium.
