"He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love." --- (SofS 2:4) Travis Case, Pastor/Teacher Northgate Baptist Church F.E.A.S.T Ministries
Introduction: A. Darkness is the Absence of Light --- or of Christ. B. Figuratively, the word "Darkness" is often used to express Ignorance or absence of the True Religion. C. It is also used to express Sin and Misery as opposed to good and happiness. I. Darkness Is Powerful In Our Lives. A. The Power of Darkness rules now. Luke 22:52-53, "Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness." B. Our Temptations do not come from mere flesh and blood. Eph. 6:12, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." II. Darkness Covers Our Mind And Soul. A. Darkness Hides Man Sins from men but Not From God. John 3:19, "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." Prov. 15:3, "The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good." Job 34:21-22, "For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. 22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves." Jer. 16:17, "For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes." Heb. 4:13, "Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do." B. We as Christians should cast off the Works of Darkness. Rom. 13:12, "The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light." III. Light Comes From God. A. In the Beginning Gen. 1:3, "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." B. In the Present. Prov. 2:6, "For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding." C. In Heaven. Isa. 60:19, "The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory." IV. Christ Is The Light of The World And He Came From God. A. John 1:1-5, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." B. Christ came to Deliver us from Darkness. John 12:46, "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness." C. Light (understanding) comes After Salvation. Mark 4:11-12, "1 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them." V. Salvation Comes From God. John 1:11-14, "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." VI. If You Reject The Light (Christ) Then You Must Reap Darkness. Jude 6, "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." Matt. 8:12, "But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." VII. God Was Made Flesh In Order That We Might Have A Way of Escape. John 1:14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
