A Pilgrim & Stranger In This World

1 Peter 2:9-12, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation."

I. The Pilgrim Must Be Ready To Journey.

A. He is ready with the New Birth.

John 3:3, "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

B. He is ready with a New Name.

Acts 11:26, "And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch."

C. He is ready with a New Vision.

John 9:25, "He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."

II. The Pilgrim Must Have The Faith To Journey.

A. Enoch journeyed by Faith.

Hebrews 11:5, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God."

B. Abraham journeyed by Faith.

Hebrews 11:8-10, "By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

C. Moses journeyed by Faith.

Hebrews 11:29, "By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned."

III. The Pilgrim Must Be Clothed To Journey.

A. He must have the Robe of Righteousness.

Isaiah 61:10, "I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels."

B. He must have the Armour of God.

Ephesians 6:13-17, "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"

IV. The Pilgrim must Know How To Journey.

A. He must walk with Wisdom.

Colossians 4:5, "Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time."

B. He must Walk After The Spirit.

Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

C. He must walk in Newness of Life.

Romans 6:4, "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

V. The Pilgrim Must Have Food For The Journey.

A. The Word of God is his food.

Matthew 4:4, "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

B. The Food of Christ Jesus.

John 4:32, "But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of."

VI. The Pilgrim Must Have A Guide For The Journey.

A. His Guide is Christ.

John 8:12, "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

B. Proverbs 16:9, "A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."

C. Proverbs 20:24, "Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?"

VII. The Pilgrim Will Be Rewarded For His Journey.

A. He will receive a Promised Crown.

2 Timothy 4:8, "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

B. He will receive Rest from his journey.

Hebrews 4:9-10, "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his."

C. There Is No Rest For The Wicked In This Life Nor The Life To Come.

1. Isaiah 57:20-21, "But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked."

2. Revelation 14:10-11, "The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name."
