Joshua's Last Message
Joshua 23:1-3
Joshua 24:14-25
I. Joshua Reminds Them of Past Blessings.
A. He tell them that it has been God who fought their battles and gave them victory.
Joshua 23:3, " And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you." --- V. 9, For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day."
Joshua 24:11-13, "And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand. 12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow. 13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat."
B. We who are Christians need to stop and think of our past blessings:
1. We were Lost.
Eph. 2:1, "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;"
2. We were on the road to hell without the power to change our course.
Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
3. Christ died for our sins.
1 Peter 2:24, "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed."
3:18, "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:"
II. Joshua Reminds Them of The Future Blessings That Had Been Promised By The Lord.
A. God shall deliver them from their enemies.
Joshua 23:5, "And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you."
B. God has promised us victory over our enemies.
1. Over Satan --- James 4:7, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
2. Over the World --- 1 John 4:4, "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
3. Over Self --- Romans 6:14, "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."
III. Joshua Reminds them of their responsibility.
A. To put away strange gods.
Joshua 23:7, "That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:"
1. Idolatry in so-called Christian lands take two forms today:
2. Materialism --- Luke 12:16, "And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
3. Playing Church --- Pretending to be right with Godl
Matt. 15:7-9, "Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."
B. To Obey The Word of God.
Joshua 23:6, "Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;"
James 1:22, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
C. To Be Wholly Devoted To The Lord.
Joshua 23:8-11, "But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. 9 For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. 10 One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you. 11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God."
IV. Joshua Warns Them of The Danger of Disregard.
A. God threatened the people with disaster if they failed to keep his covenant.
Joshua 23:15-16, "Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. 16 When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you."
B. God is no respecter of persons.
Acts 10:43, "To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins."
C. The attitude of today is one of lawlessness.
"I belong to no man, I will do as I please."
D. But if a man is saved he blongs to God, and is expected to do His Will.
Luke 6:45-49, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."
