The Christian's Faith & Convictions

Luke 5:1-11, "And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him."

Introduction:

A. Mark 9:23, "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."

B. Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

I. The Christian's Faith.

A. Faith in God through Jesus Christ is the Greatest Lever of Power For Service.

1. Faith is the Cup, in which the begging lost soul receives life from God.

2. Faith is the Wire, bearing to the soul the current of heavenly grace.

3. Faith is the Key, that unlocks God's treasures and granaries.

4. Faith is the Outstretched Hand of A Sinner, which God takes hold of .....

5. Faith is the delicate Needle, with which God vaccinates and sanctifies our souls.

B. Faith is God's spiritual tonic for Character.

1. It made a Moses laugh at Pharaoh --- the barriers of sea --- and desert .....

2. For Joshua it bridged swollen Jordans --- demolished Jerichos --- held back setting suns .....

3. For Daniel it took the rage out of the lions' den.

4. For the Hebrew Children, it took the destroying elements ofut of the fire.

5. It made heroes like --- John The Baptist --- Paul --- Spurgeon --- Moody --- Bunyan --- Finney --- Livingstone .....

6. Faith is a Divine Necessity to all who would win lost souls for God.

1 John 5:4, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."

Daniel 11:32, "And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits."

C. If our faith is to make us Conquerors, it must possess Certain Spiritual Ingredients.

1. It must be Reliant.

Psalm 37:5, "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass."

2. It must be Unstaggering.

Romans 4:20, "He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;"

3. It must be Persist in the face of God's denials and delays.

Matthew 15:22-28, "And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. 27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. 28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour:"

4. Faith must Look Above Difficulties unto God.

a. Moses did this at the Red Sea.

b. Elijah did this at Mount Carmel.

c. Paul did it in facing the devil's agents.

d. You and I must do it if we are to win lost souls for Christ.

5. Faith must Remember its true and only source of supply.

Hebrews 12:2, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

D. Peter's miraculous walk on the water Failed When He Took His Eyes Off Jesus.

2. He is the Visible Image of the invisible God.

Hebrews 1:3, "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"
