"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine:"   (Prov. 17:22)
"... the joy of the LORD is your strength."   (Neh. 8:10)

2 Timothy 1:7, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear (anxiety, worry, tension, nervousness, stress, pressure, despair, despondency); but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

I. Man Has Three General Parts -- Spirit -- Soul -- Body.

1 Thess. 5:23, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and <I pray God> your whole [spirit] and [soul] and [body] be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

II. The Bible Groups These Three Parts As Two:

A. The Outer Man ® Body --- Also referred to as the "Flesh" --- the "Adamic" nature.

1. Also referred to as our "House" --- "Tabernacle" --- "Temple" --- "Mansion" in which we live.

2. 2 Peter 1:13-14, "Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting <you> in remembrance; {14} Knowing that shortly I must put off <this> my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath showed me."

3. 2 Tim. 4:6, "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand."

B. The Inner Man ® Spirit & Soul.

1. Rom. 7:22-23, "For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: {23} But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."

2. 2 Cor. 4:16, "For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward <man> is renewed day by day."

3. Eph. 3:16, "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;"

III. The Outer Man (Flesh, Natural Man, Adamic Nature) Is Given Up By God As Hopeless, Useless, And Consigned Back To The Dust From Which It Came.

A. Rom. 5:12, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into he world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

B. Eph. 2:1-3, "And you <hath he quickened>, who were dead in trespasses and sins: {2} Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: {3} Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

C. Rom. 3:10-12, "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: {11} There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. {12} They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

D. Rom. 7:18, "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing:" --- 8:8, "So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."

E. Eccl. 12:7, "Then shall the [dust return] to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall [return] unto God who gave it."

IV. The Spirit Is The Real "You" & Includes The "Five Senses" --- (Sight --- Hearing --- Touch --- Taste --- Smell)

A. Luke 16:23-24, "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. {24} And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame."

B. We were created in the Image of God --- God Is A Spirit --- Therefore we were created a Spiritual Being!

1. Gen. 1:26, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:"

2. John 4:24, "[God] <is> a [Spirit]: and they that worship him must worship <him> in [spirit] and in [truth]."

C. We Do Not Have a spirit, We Are a spirit! --- We Have a House, a Tabernacle, a Temple, a Body in which we live.

2 Cor. 5:1-8, "For we know that if our earthly house of <this> tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. {2} For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: {3} If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. {4} For we that are in <this> tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life." --- V.6, " Therefore <we are> always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: {7} (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) {8} We are confident, <I say>, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."

D. It is the Spirit That Is Born of God and made a Partaker of His Divine Nature! --- the Flesh Is Not Changed! --- As we have already seen.

1. 1 John 3:1-2, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the Sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, Now are we the Sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be Like Him; for we shall see him as he is." V. 9, "Whosoever is Born of God doth not commit sin; for his Seed (Sperma) remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is Born of God."

2. Eph. 5:30, "For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones."

3. 2 Peter 1:4, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature,"

V. The Soul (Also Referred To As The "Heart") Is The Conscious Self That Governs All Our Actions.

A. Matt. 15:19, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:"

B. The Soul (Heart) operates through Three Faculties:

1. The heart Thinks through the Mind.

a. Don't allow your heart to do your thinking for you.

b. Phil. 2:5, "Let this [mind] be in you, which was also in [Christ] Jesus:"

c. 2 Cor. 10:5, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"

d. Phil. 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever [things] are true, whatsoever [things] <are> honest, whatsoever [things] <are> just, whatsoever [things] <are> pure, whatsoever [things] <are> lovely, whatsoever [things] <are> of good report; if <there be> any virtue, and if <there be> any praise, [think] on these [things]."

e. Rom. 12:1-2, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, <which is> your reasonable service. {2} And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what <is> that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

f. There Is A Great Battle Going On For The Control of Your Mind!

2. The heart Decides through the Will.

a. Jer. 17:9, "The heart <is> deceitful above all <things>, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

b. Are you going to Allow Such A Heart To Made Decisions For You?

c. We must Control Our Hearts rather than Allowing Our Hearts To Control Us!

Prov. 4:23, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it <are> the issues of life."

3. The heart Feels through the Emotions.

a. Jer. 17:9, "The heart <is> deceitful above all <things>, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

b. Are you going to Allow Such A Heart To Tell You How To Feel?

c. Phil. 4:4, "[Rejoice] in the Lord [alway]: <and> again I say, [Rejoice]."

d. Heb. 13:15, "By him therefore let us offer the [sacrifice] of [praise] to God continually, that is, the fruit of <our> lips giving thanks to his name."

VI. The Flesh And The Spirit Are Constantly At War With Each Other --- Battling For Control! --- of The Soul (Mind, Will, & Emotions)

A. Gal. 5:16-17, "<This> I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. {17} For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

B. Paul --- Rom. 7:14-25, "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. {15} For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. {16} If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that <it is> good. {17} Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. {18} For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but <how> to perform that which is good I find not. {19} For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. {20} Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. {21} I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. {22} For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: {23} But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. {24} O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? {25} I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."

Understanding The Human Heart

I. Keep in mind --- The Soul (Heart) operates through Three Faculties:

A. The heart Thinks through the Mind.

B. The heart Decides through the Will.

C. The heart Feels through the Emotions.

II. Your Heart Is The Center (Mainspring) of Your Life!

Prov. 4:23, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it <are> the issues of life."

Matt. 15:19, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:" (Mark 7:21)

Luke 6:45, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."

III. There Are Certain Things Which Influences Our Hearts --- Without Our Choice:

A. The heart is Born With A Tendency To Sin.

Rom. 5:19, "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, ..."

Jer. 17:9, "The heart <is> deceitful above all <things>, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

B. The heart is characterized by Foolishness When Young.

Prov. 22:15, "Foolishness <is> bound in the heart of a child; <but> the rod of correction shall drive it far from him."

C. The heart Responds To Training.

Prov. 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

Eph. 6:4, "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

D. The heart Responds To Modeling (Examples) Both Good And Evil.

1. Past Models influence Present Behavior.

What Parents Do (or allow) In Moderation --- Their Children Do In Excess!

2. Abraham's Deception becomes Isaac's Solution!

Gen. 20:2, "And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She <is> my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah."

Gen. 26:9, "And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she <is> thy wife: and how saidst thou, She <is> my sister? ....."

(And of course you remember how it continued with Jacob --- the trickster)

3. Influence of Negative Modeling:

Prov. 23:17, "Let not thine heart envy sinners: but <be thou> in the fear of the LORD all the day long."

1 Cor. 15:33, "Be not deceived: evil communications (companions) corrupt good manners."

4. Influence of Positive Modeling:

2 Tim. 2:22, "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

1 Thess. 1:1-2, "Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians <which is> in God the Father and <in> the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace <be> unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. {2} We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; {3} Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; {4} Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. {5} For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. {6} And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: {7} So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. {8} For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing."

1 Thess. 2:10-12, "Ye <are> witnesses, and God <also>, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: {11} As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father <doth> his children, {12} That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory."

Phil. 4:9, "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

1 Peter 5:3, "Neither as being lords over <God's> heritage, but being ensamples to the flock."

Strategies For Breaking This Cycle
of An Unhealthy Self-Image:

I. First, we must begin with a True And Honest Insight of Ourself --- we must Consistently Examine Our Hearts in a Healthy manner.

1 Cor. 11:31-32, "For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. {32} But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world."

1 John 3:21-22, "Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, <then> have we confidence toward God. {22} And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight."

II. Second, we must Accept God as a Perfect Father.

A. Our View of God is greatly molded by our Experience With Our Parents or guardians.

1. Having Involved and Concerned parents with Steady Character, give us a View of God as Steady, Trustworthy and Reliable.

2. Having parents that were Distant, Absent or Self-Absorbed, give us a View of God as being Needed Only When A "Real" Problem has occurred and you Need Something From Him.

3. Having Controlling parents that were often Harsh In Their Discipline, give a View of God as Judgmental and Legalistic and Never Satisfied With Us.

4. Having Abusive parents, give us a View of God as Unconcerned or Non-Existent.

B. We must Consciously Replace Our Wrong Impressions With A Biblical View of God.

III. Third, We must invite Close, Quality, and Personal Friends to Interact Honestly With us About us.

A. Learn to value Real Friends who will tell you the Real Truth about yourself.

B. Prov. 27:5-6, "Open rebuke <is> better than secret love. {6} Faithful <are> the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy <are> deceitful." --- V. 9, "Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so <doth> the sweetness of a man's [friend] by hearty counsel." --- V. 17, "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his [friend]."

C. Share Character Goals with Proven Friends who will help and encourage you.

1. Goals for your view of Yourself.

2. Goals for your view of Others In General.

3. Goals for your view of Significant Others.

4. Goals for your view of God.

IV. Finally, In Order To Accomplish These Three, we must have an honest insight as to the Impact of Our Parents' & Friends Influence Upon Us.

A. This is Not for the purpose of Placing Blame.

B. It is for the purpose of Learning About Ourselves.

C. Thus, we shall study the "Stages of Life" or

B. We are Reflective of God's Nature.

II. Know Who You Are --- A Child of God, A Partaker of His Very Nature --- Forgiven of All Sins.

A. Of course, we are only talking about "Born-Again Christians" --- as "Children of God".

B. To the Lost --- John 8:44, "Ye are of <your> [father] the [devil], and the lusts of your [father] ye will do."

C. To the Saved --- 1 John 3:1-2, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the Sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

Eph. 2:1, "And you <hath he quickened>, who were dead in trespasses and sins:"

D. Eph. 5:30, "For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones."

E. 2 Peter 1:4, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature,"

F. 1 John 3:1-3, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. {2} Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. {3} And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."

G. 2 Cor. 5:21, "For he hath made him <to be> sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

III. Know What Position We Hold --- The Representatives And Stewards of God In This World.

A. 2 Cor. 5:17-20, "Therefore if any man <be> in Christ, <he is> a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. {18} And all things <are> of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; {19} To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. {20} Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech <you> by us: we pray <you> in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God."

If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. {21} But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me."

B. Gal. 6:17, "From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the [marks] of the [Lord] Jesus."

2. If God was willing to sacrifice His own Son to Save Souls --- He Will Also be willing to Sacrifice You & Me.

3. Paul --- Romans 9:3, "... For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:"

E. God was Seperated From His Son --- This is where the Comparison Ends!

Rom. 8:35-39, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? <shall> tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? {36} As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. {37} Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. {38} For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, {39} Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

V. Know & Realize That Growing In Spiritual Character Will Always Be A Battle In This Life.

VI.. Know & Understand That It Will Take Time To Rebuild Areas of Your Life Crippled By Past Events.

Heb. 12:1-3, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset <us>, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, {2} Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of <our> faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. {3} For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds."

VII. Know & Understand The Vital Importance Being Active In A Biblical Local Church.

Heb. 10:23-39, "Let us hold fast the profession of <our> faith without wavering; (for he <is> faithful that promised;) {24} And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: {25} Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some <is>; but exhorting <one another>: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. {26} For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, {27} But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. {28} He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: {29} Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? {30} For we know him that hath said, Vengeance <belongeth> unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. {31} <It is> a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. {32} But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; {33} Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. {34} For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. {35} Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. {36} For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. {37} For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. {38} Now the just shall live by faith: but if <any man> draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. {39} But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul."
