"... the joy of the LORD is your strength." (Neh. 8:10)
Introduction: A. If Jesus Is God (and He is), and if Jesus Became Man (and He did), How did He become man? John 1:14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." Gal. 4:4, "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law," B. However, His was Not An Ordinary Birth! --- There has never been another like it Before or Since --- His was a Virgin Birth. C. Those who discard the truth of the supernatural element in His birth also disbelieve the Other Great Christian Doctrines. D. Any Such Denial of His virgin birth Also Involves a denial of: 1. His Sinless Life, 2. The Authority of His Teaching, 3. The Wonder of His Miracles, 4. The Vicarious nature of His Atonement, 5. His Bodily resurrection and ascension, 6. The Personality of His Holy Spirit, 7. The triumph of His second coming. E. God has Five Ways of making a human body: 1. Without the agency of either man or woman --- as He made Adam --- Gen. 2:7. 2. By the law of natural generation --- as He made You And Me --- Gen. 1:28. 3. As He made Eve --- Gen. 2:21-22. 4. Through a man and a woman both of whom are Past Child-Bearing Age --- as He made Isaac --- Gen. 18:11-15, 21:1-2. 5. As He "made" a Human Body For His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ --- Isa. 7:14, Matt. 1:20, Gal. 4:4, Heb. 10:5. I. In View of Who Jesus Is, The Virgin Birth Was A Necessary. A. The "How" of His birth is easy to believed when the "Who" of the birth is taken into account. B. If Jesus was Just A Man then the Virgin Birth Will Seem Incomprehensible --- but if He Is God, then His Virgin Birth Becomes A Necessary. II. The Virgin Birth Was Necessary To Make Possible The Incarnation. A. The Virgin Birth was Necessary for the mysterious Union of The Divine And The Human --- God and man --- The God Man. B. This took place when Jesus (Who was God) was conceived by the Holy Ghost in the womb of the Virgin Mary (who was human). Gal. 4:4, "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law," C. In order to be Sinless --- His Had To Be A Virgin Birth. III. The Virgin Birth Is The Only Explanation of His Sinless Life. A. The Bible is clear that Jesus' Life Was Sinless: John 8:46, "Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?" Heb. 4:15, "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as <we are>, <yet> without sin." --- 7:26, "For such an high priest became us, <who is> holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;" 1 Peter 2:21-22, "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: {22} Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:" B. He had to be Sinless in order to be the Redeemer of Mankind. Exo. 12:5, "Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take <it> out from the sheep, or from the goats:" John 1:29, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." C. Had He been Born According To The Natural Process He would have Inherited A Sinful Nature. John 3:6, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." D. The Virgin Life demanded a Virgin Birth. IV. The Truth of The Virgin Birth Is Indispensable To The Integrity of The Bible. A. If we could possibly Prove that the Bible Is Wrong About The Virgin Birth, 1. We would have to Cast The Whole Bible Aside As Being Unreliable. 2. To Question One Part Is To Question The Whole. B. The doctrine of the Virgin Birth is Clearly Taught In The Holy Scriptures. Gen. 3:15, "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." Isa. 7:14, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Jer. 31:22, "How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man." Matt. 1:16-23, "And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. {17} So all the generations from Abraham to David <are> fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon <are> fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ <are> fourteen generations. {18} Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. {19} Then Joseph her husband, being a just <man>, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. {20} But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. {21} And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. {22} Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, {23} Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." V. We Believe In The Virgin Birth Because Our Salvation Depends Upon It! A. The whole principle of the Virgin Birth --- of the Incarnation --- is involved in the Experience of Salvation. B. 1 John 5:10-13, "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. {11} And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. {12} He that hath the Son hath life; <and> he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. {13} These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." Luke 2:25-38, "And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name <was> Simeon; and the same man <was> just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. {26} And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. {27} And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, {28} Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, {29} Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: {30} For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, {31} Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; {32} A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. {33} And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. {34} And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this <child> is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; {35} (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. {36} And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; {37} And she <was> a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served <God> with fastings and prayers night and day. {38} And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem." John 3:3-7, "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily , verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. {4} Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? {5} Jesus answered, Verily , verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and <of> the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. {6} That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. {7} Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
