PATTON

 

Links to the Helbron family come from the marriage of my maternal great-great-grandparents, John Frederick Riley and Elizabeth Ann Patton on 25 June 1846 in Huntsville, Randolph Co., MO. Their daughter, Mary Catherine “Mollie” Riley, married James Milton Herndon; their daughter, Ida Josephine Herndon, married Robert Marion Best; their youngest daughter, Nellie Voil Best, married John Rudolph Helbron.

 

Much of the earlier Patton lineages has been derived from research by other Patton descendants. The earliest Patton in this work is John Patton, born about 1685, probably in Londonderry, Ulster, Northern Ireland. It is assumed that his son, Matthew Lander Patton, was the emigrant, although the exact date of his emigration is not known, but before 1724. No on-line passenger lists have found to-date.  

 

Our side of the large Patton family appears to have moved from Pennsylvania, down to Western North Carolina, then southwestward into Tennessee and/or Alabama, then up to Northern Missouri. The rationale for this seemingly unusual migration pattern is unknown.
