Links to the Helbron
family are through the marriage of Jean Jacques Gerardy and Susanne
Johannes. Their daughter, Catherine,
married Johann Baptist Helbron II in 1835. This Johannes family resided in Biringen
and supposedly purchased Schloss Helbron after the last Helbron descendant
living there died in 1919. Of the other two remaining Helbron brothers, one
emigrated to the U.S.; the other relocated to Northern Germany.
Based on available records, it appears that
there were either two unrelated Johannes families living in the same area or
were distant cousins and such a marriage between the two families was
permitted. In any event, a marriage occurred between a Peter Johannes and a
Margarethe Brettnacher before 1730, probably in Biringen, Saarland, Germany and
between a Peter (or Johann Peter) Johannes and a Katharina Grier before 1737,
place unknown. The problem here is that available records do not go back far
enough in time to verify a connection between these two families. Considerable
data have been compiled on other Johannes family descendants, both in Germany
and those that emigrated to the U.S., but without more definitive information,
no conclusive link can be made between these two Peter Johannes. To further
complicate the issue, these given names appear frequently in the Johannes
family lineages!
On-line sources
indicate that several Johannes families from the Saarland region emigrated to
the U.S. prior to 1859. One of the first was Jacob Johannes,
son of Nikolaus Johannes and Maria Sievert, of Fitten, Saarland, Germany.
Jacob, his wife Margarethe Reiter, and five family members arrived in New
Orleans aboard the Aurelius on 28 Dec 1847 from Le Harve. This
family settled in Jennings Co., IN. Two brothers and their families from the
same region, Peter Johannes and Nikolaus Johannes, emigrated to the U.S. and
settled initially in Racine Co., WI. Peter arrived in New York aboard the Catherine
on 15 Jun 1847 from Antwerp, Belgium; Nicholas arrived in New York aboard the Progress
on 14 May 1859 from Le Harve. Nikolaus’ son, Peter, and his family arrived in
New York aboard the South Carolina on 17 May 1854 from Antwerp.
Nikolaus’ other son, Nikolaus II, arrived in New York aboard the Dorette
on 25 Aug 1854 from Antwerp. Peter and some of his descendants moved to Osceola
Co., IA. These emigrant families
are possibly linked to those outlined below due to the close proximity of the
hometowns identified in certain records, however, no positive link has been
determined to-date.
