CHRISTOS TSIAMOULIS

The paper proposed by Christos Tsiamoulis will be presented in two one-hour sections, dealing with the theory and practice of modes in Greek, Byzantine and Oriental music.

SUMMARY: Christos Tsiamoulis, a singer and instrumentalist of long standing, currently teaches a highly-regarded course on Maqam and Byzantine modes and Maqam at the Odeio Athinon academy in Athens.

For the 2004 Hydra Conference he is preparing a double seminar on modes and maqam in Greek music. This will take place on the Saturday morning (10.00am to 12.30pm), in two hour-long sessions.

He will begin with an account of the modes of Ancient Greek music, looking at how they developed in the music of Anatolia, and then in Rebetiko. A discussion of the musical intervals will be illustrated by Christos on his politiki laouto.

The second session will take two maqams and will examine how the theory becomes practical in the practice of taksim. This will be a hands-on workshop. It is possible that this session will develop into a further session.

Christos will speak mainly in Greek, but notes will be pre-circulated in English.
