A dance workshop on “Dance modes of Greece and Anatolia

by Madelyn Taylor

SUMMARY:

DANCE GENRES OF REBETIKA [Part 2]:  Hasapikos, Hasapaservikos & Fast Hasapikos. Workshop participants will learn the construction of the dances, and will be shown how to join various step patterns together in each genre.  We will work with improvisation in each dance.

We hope also to run a second workshop:

Review of DANCE GENRES OF REBETIKA [Part 1]:  Zeybekiko, Karsilamas, and Aptalikos – material covered at the Hydra Conference 2003.

CV: Madelyn Taylor holds a Masters Degree in Dance Ethnology from the University of California at Los Angeles.  Her thesis "A Festival in Northwestern  Greece" covers the history and psycho-social importance of the annual August 15th "paniyiri" to the people from the Greek village of Kastani, Epirus. This event features music and dance of the region.

After moving to Greece in 1995 Ms. Taylor began studying Greek traditional dances with Yiannis Konstantinou, and Marina Xristofaki.  While in Greece Madelyn attended workshops featuring Greek traditional dance and customs, taught by master teachers from many specific geographic zones.  She continues to take courses in Greece, Europe and in North America.

Currently Madelyn is a choreographer of ethnic material for stage, screen and television, and produces folk dance festivals for children throughout Los Angeles County.  Ms. Taylor has taught dance at UCLA, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine universities. She has two married children and four grandchildren.
