"The Characteristics of the
Music of Asia Minor Greeks and the Effects of “Population Exchange” in Greek
Music: A Comparative Approach"
[Paper presented in English, with musical illustrations]
This study is an examination of some
of the roots of the today’s Greek Music in the region of Anatolia. The work
starts with a brief overview of the subject of the “makam”, on which the main
content of this paper will be based. In this section the musical and the
spiritual theory of the “makam” concept will be discussed. These discussion
will be concluded with musical examples from Turkish music and Anatolian based
Smyrnaika and Politika.
After that, we will offer historical
and geographical observations on the exchange of Greek and Turkish populations
in 1923, which will help to locate the roots of the musical influences
extending from Anatolia to Greece.
The research will continue by a
comparative study of today’s Greek Music and the Greek Music before 1923. This
stage of the paper will concentrate on the observable application differences
of the “makam” theory in Greek Music in the past 100 years. The study will
conclude with a discussion of the possible effects of the Anatolian Music on
today’s Greek Music after 1923 in terms of “makam” applications.

"Nuit sans lune"
[Paper presented in English, with musical illustrations]
Luc Bongrand has just finished the cutting of his film "Nuit sans
lune" (Night with no moon/Νυχτωσε
χωρις φεγγαρι). This movie is the result
of 2 years of work, co-produced with ERT and the Greek Ministry of Culture,
retracing the history of Rebetiko in parallel with Greek history. The movie
shows rare archives, interviews, and rebetiko music (archives but also Stelios
Vamvakaris...). [52' film]

"Project for An Interactive Contributive Rebetiko Database"
[Paper presented in English] - 15 mn.
SUMMARY: Presentation of a personal work-in-progress database which
pulls together basic information about rebetika and rebetes. The database
features cross-search functionalities. It can operate as a stand-alone
application, or can be linked to an external records database with an MP3
player.
The next step of this project would be to convert the application into a
contributive interactive online database, moderated, but open to visitors for
consultation and updating.
My paper will describe the present stage of development of the project.
I shall point out the different problems encountered, and the choices that have
been made regarding language, structure and (just a bit) technologies.

"Rebetika Re-Orientalised: Its
Development as World Music"
[Paper presented in English]
The paper considers some of the social and political
factors that have contributed to the revival of Asia Minor rebetika and
concludes that it is part of a broader appreciation by Greeks of their "oriental" or Ottoman past. The early Piraeus rebetika, like other urban
musical forms that developed at roughly the same time, is a hybrid form with elements of Asia Minor music grafted onto local musical
elements.
Greek perceptions of the Smyrna style rebetika as
"oriental" and un-Greek led
to modifications and finally to the demise of the café aman tradition. The
orient was exoticised by Tsitsanis and distanced from Greece. Later it formed
the basis of the new hybrid style of the western-trained composers of the
1960's, particularly Theodorakis. In the 1980's and 90's there was a revival of
interest in Asia Minor Music which continues to this day. Among the factors
contributing to this revival have been M.T.V., World Music, availability of
recordings and shifts in global politics. I conlude that each "orientation" of the rebetika reflects an ambivalent relation of Greeks to their self
perception as European and Levantines.

MUAMMER KETENCOGLOU

“COMPANIA KETENCOGLOU”
"Shared Influences
in Turkish Music and Rebetika"
[Paper presented in English, with
musical illustrations]
SOMETHING IS HAPPENING IN ISTANBUL
For the lover of Greek popular music
as it was sung at the urban centers of Hellenism until the mid-20th century
(what we now call “rebetiko”), Istanbul is a place of pilgrimage. The former
capital and center of Hellenic culture was one of the principal centers of the
older form of the so-called Smyrnaic song (named after its other, more recent,
home). This can be verified simply by recalling the well-known Costantinopolitan
and Tataulian “hasapika” and “hasaposervika” or the so-called Costantinopolitan
“syrto.”
All this, of course, is old news for
aficionados of rebetiko. The pleasant surprise waiting for them in Istanbul is
a fully functional, wonderful local rebetiko ensemble whose members are
permanent, not occasional, residents of the city. Muammer Ketencoglu, a
Turk from Izmir (Smyrna) is the group’s leader and its soul. He is a truly
gifted musician, an exceptional virtuoso of the accordion whose wealth of knowledge
of rebetiko surprises the experts. His instrumental and vocal performances stay
true to the authentic style of the genre, even though he neither reads nor
speaks Greek. Evidence of Muammer’s knowledge of and love for rebetiko is his
thoughtful participation in the production of two CDs of rebetika songs -
chiefly of the Smyrnaic period - remastered from old 78 r.p.m. recordings.
His leadership role in various musical
ventures reveals that the level and breadth of his musical knowledge are not
limited to rebetiko but also cover wide areas of Balkan music, and, naturally,
Turkish music.
Orhan Osman, a Muslim from Komotini, is the
group’s bouzouki player. An outstanding interpreter in the style of Manolis
Hiotis, he also sings - and speaks - well in Greek. His youth and impressive
technique promise that his continuing ease with the traditional style will
render him equal to the better players in Greece. The two basic instruments are
accompanied by the very able percussionist Rahmi Göçmen, a native of Istanbul.
Ivi Dermanci, a Costantinopolitan Greek born and bred, is the group’s
female vocalist. In her plain and very melodic voice she interprets the songs
in the group’s repertory accurately and authentically, with none of the
theatrics and pseudo-impressions that might diminish their effectiveness.
Lastly, Stelios Berberis, from Imvros (Gökçeada), the sweet-voiced
cantor of the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate at the Phanar, provides the vocal
ability necessary for the group’s rendition of the older songs in their
repertory.
“Compania Ketencoglu” is very well
known in Istanbul, despite the fact that, in principle, they eschew night
clubs, appearing instead at “boites” as well as at festivals and similar
venues. They have appeared at several locales in Turkey and abroad, and several
times at festivals and recitals in Greece. Although their repertory consists
almost exclusively of rebetiko, from Smyrnaica to Tstitsanis and Kazantzidis,
and similar Turkish songs, it occasionally extends to songs by Theodorakis.
In other words, it could be said
that a small and diverse musical group is trying to express the wealth of the
popular musical expression of the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural capital of
the Ottoman Empire at its death-bed. Although their place, and the locus of
their contribution is, and must stay, in Istanbul, one hopes we will have more
frequent opportunities to enjoy and applaud them here in Greece. [Miltiadis

The paper begins by pointing out to the almost exclusive preoccupation of
researchers with rebetiko and the relative lack of interest in the popular
music that succeeded it. We believe
that this is not accidental, but reflects ideological assumptions that need to
be examined. From that perspective we
attempt a comparison between rebetiko and skyladhiko and try to specify
continuities and discontinuities.

Ideological and methodological approaches to rebetiko.
The contribution of local paradigms of Crete and Lesbos
SUMMARY: It is generally accepted that rebetiko was born at big cities of Greece and flourished during the inter-war period, especially after the arrival of Asia Minor refugees. The decade of 1930 was the period that rebetiko was developing and managed to dominate older music genres, like Smyrnaika and demotic, despite the prosecutions and the prejudices which accompanied it. Rebetiko emerged as a popular modernity which conflicted with progressive streamlined or reactionary modernity of the ideology of middle and high stratums and the state practices of its era.
Rebetiko is faced as an otherness with a different system of values on which will be shaped rejecting stereotypes. The postwar re-evaluation from named intellectuals and creators will attempt, partially, to move it via an ideological, social and musicological "translatability" which allows the transition either to popular or artistic song and to the recognition of its music value.
The scientific research of rebetiko was directed to named rebetes and discography ignoring dimensions of social conditions of its production and the social and cultural context in Athens, let alone in the periphery. Instead of focusing on primary historical and anthropological research, the study of rebetiko continues to be based on secondhand sources, (published narratives of named creators, some of them, methodologically, of questionable quality, and verses of songs), constructing theoretical shapes and generalizations which are not adequately documented.
The conception which remains strong till today is that rebetiko and its evolution to popular song has a center from which it diffused at the periphery. The study and emergency of some local paradigms give us the opportunity to diversify this point of view and to investigate a hypothesis of work regarding both the social conditions of production of rebetiko and the mechanisms of its diffusion and reception. The research of Crete and Lesbos allow us to pose new questions for the conception of urbanity of rebetiko and for its local versions.

KATALIN SZABO
– SUMMARY
"The Topography of Rebetiko"
Katalin Szabo is a Hungarian scholar, a Modern Greek philologist,
recently engaged on post-graduate research in the sociology department of the Panteion
University, Athens. She researches in the field of Rebetika.
The provisional title of her paper is: The Topography of Rebetiko.
SUMMARY: "I am doing research in Athens on the places of
entertainment where rebetiko was played (tekes, cafe aman, taverna, bouzoukia).
Because the rebetiko became from the songs of a marginal class, thus a very
popular music, I am interested in how this process evolved. The contribution of
Asia Minor culture is very important in spreading of this type of music. They had
different type of entertainment from the original local inhabitants of Piraeus,
regarding the places, cultural background of the musicians, education and
customs.
"The role of recordings was also very important in spreading and
popularisation of rebetiko, by commercialising the songs. The places where
rebetiko was played, like the style, went through several changes. Those places
are able to reflect the changes that led rebetiko to its popularity.
Researching these places, I attempt to track the changes that rebetiko went
through. In particular how it developed into another type of music
(archontorebetiko) to match the expectations of the new audience. The details
of interior design and customers of these places determine these changes. I am
very interested in the social status (professions, background etc) of the
customers of these places."

"Ya Sou Manga Mou Dervisi: Sufi Symbolism in Rebetiko Culture"
[Paper presented in English]
SUMMARY: Kirsti Thorsen's paper seeks to analyse the frequent references
to the dervish cult of Sufi Islam in the rebetika texts, by relating them to
the culture of the manges in Piraeus at the beginning of the 20th
century. She argues that this symbolism serves as metaphors in the construction
of a separate identity and articulation of a special world-view of this social
group, which stands in opposition to the accepted norms and values of the
dominant culture in urban Greece at the time.
