The paper begins by pointing out to the almost exclusive preoccupation of researchers with rebetiko and the relative lack of interest in the popular music that succeeded it.  We believe that this is not accidental, but reflects ideological assumptions that need to be examined.  From that perspective we attempt a comparison between rebetiko and skyladhiko and try to specify continuities and discontinuities.
