Kirsti Thorsen seeks to analyse the frequent references to
the dervish cult of Sufi Islam in the rebetika texts, by relating them to the
culture of the manges in Piraeus at the beginning of the 20th century.
She argues that this symbolism serves as metaphors in the construction of a
separate identity and articulation of a special world-view of this social
group, which stands in opposition to the accepted norms and values of the
dominant culture in urban Greece at the time.
