KATALIN SZABO – SUMMARY

"The Topography of Rebetiko"

[Paper presented in Greek]

SUMMARY: "I am doing research in Athens on the places of entertainment where rebetiko was played (tekes, cafe aman, taverna, bouzukia). Because the rebetiko became from the songs of a marginal class, thus a very popular music, I am interested in how this process evolved. The contribution of Asia Minor culture is very important in spreading of this type of music. They had different type of entertainment from the original local inhabitants of Piraeus, regarding the places, cultural background of the musicians, education and customs.

"The role of recordings was also very important in spreading and popularisation of rebetiko, by commercialising the songs. The places where rebetiko was played, like the style, went through several changes. Those places are able to reflect the changes that led rebetiko to its popularity. Researching these places, I attempt to track the changes that rebetiko went through. In particular how it developed into another type of music (archontorebetiko) to match the expectations of the new audience. The details of interior design and customers of these places determine these changes. I am very interested in the social status (professions, background etc) of the customers of these places."
