SUMMARY: In Thessaloniki the powerful pre-war culture of the
Jews of the city co-existed alongside the early development of Rebetiko. This
paper examines the points where the two cultures meet in music and song.
Alberto
Nar, a pillar of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, died earlier this year.
Before he died he gave permission to Ed Emery to present his paper on his
behalf at the Hydra Rebetiko Conference.
The
full version of the paper is being translated by Ed Emery and John Koulentianos,
for inclusion in the forthcoming volume “Researching Rebetiko”.
